In the early 1980`s ITF Taekwon-Do was taught at many schools throughout BC, Caribou Interior Taekwon-Do (under Mr. John Roussel), Kootney Taekwon-Do (under Mr. St. Thind) and several Schools in the lower mainland under various instructors.
In May of 1986 the Founder of Taekwon-Do, General Choi Hong HI, Master James Lim and Master Tran Trieu Quan traveled to Williams Lake BC for a weekend to meet Taekwon-Do practitioners from around the province, with just over 250 people in attendance.
A meeting was arranged in 1987 between those interested in forming a provincial body for the ITF in BC, to be named the ITF of BC. A society was formed and registered as the ITF of BC by those in attendance. Later that year a crest was designed by and approved by the board of directors for the ITF of BC provincial crest.
Membership increased in 1989 as the Okanogan Valley Taekwon-Do group (under the late Mr. Keith Black) joined the ITF of BC. The ITF of BC now had representation in the Northern, Central, Kootney and Lower Mainland regions of BC.
1989 BC hosted the 1st Northern BC Championships as well as, BC Provincial Championships in Williams Lake (with Mr. John Roussel) and a seminar was held that weekend with Master James Lim.
Growth continued within the group and in 1993 BC hosted the Western Canadian Championships in Penticton BC with Mr. Keith Black as well as their 1st International Instructor Seminar, in Vancouver with General Choi Hong Hi, Master Jung Hwa Choi and Master Andre Blake.
By 1995 the ITF of BC had approximately 1300 members. The Provincial BC Championships were held in Kamloops that year with 315 competitors (hosted by Mr. Robert Gill and Mr. John Roussel).
In 1996 BC won the bid to host the Canadian Championships. Vancouver was chosen for the location for the 1996 Canadian Championships and held in May of 1996 with Mr. Lipscombe as the tournament director.
BC held its 2nd International Instructor Seminar, in Vancouver, December of 2001, with General Choi Hong Hi.
BC held the Canadian Championships again in 2002, in Vancouver (hosted by Mr. Dennis Alvey) and the Western Canadian Championships in 2003 in Prince George (hosted by Mr. Kurt Ottesen).
The 1st International Instructor Seminar held after the passing of the Founder, General Choi Hong Hi, was held by the ITF of BC in Vancouver, with the new President Master Tran Trieu Quan (Canada), Master Tratjenberg(Argentina), and Master Morano(Argentina), in November of 2004.
Today the ITF of BC is a thriving community of committed instructors and students. Schools affiliated with the ITF of BC can be found throughout the province. The organization is deeply committed to the philosophy of ITF Taekwon-Do and the advancement of its students. We will continue to provide opportunities for students to excel through sanctioned tournaments and seminars with world renowned master instructors.
