What is Taekwon-Do?
Taekwon-Do literally means "the way of the foot and the hand". "Tae" stands for jumping or flying, to kick or smash with the foot, "Kwon" denotes fist chiefly to punch or destroy with the hand or fist and "Do" means an art or way to self improvement.
Taekwon-Do is noted for its amazing kicks and devastating hand strikes. It is also a powerful tool to create purpose in movement and thought. Students of all ages can participate and excel at this martial art.
Philosophy
The philosophy of ITF Taekwon-Do is based on harmony and co-operation. Students are encouraged to respect themselves and others. A main feature of ITF Taekwon-Do philosophy is the concept of moral culture.
• Moral culture can be described as work ethic committed to the spirit of harmony and community well-being.
• Through observing the values such as courtesy, integrity and self-control in the dojang(training hall) combined with the self discipline to achieve(black belt) success, students are better prepared to contribute to the community in a positive manner.
Awareness, Assertion and Action
Many of us enroll in a martial arts program to develop self defense skills. As you progress in your Taekwon-Do so will your ability to effectively deal with an assailant. However, fighting is always the last solution to confrontation. We are much better off to follow our instincts and avoid situations which make us feel uncomfortable. A positive attitude and strong body posture(2 benefits from Taekwon-Do training) will also reduce the risk of intimidation and assault.
